Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density (ENFD)

An Experienced, Insightful, and Innovative Pathology Partner

BROCHURE

ENFD

ABOUT OUR TEST

EmeritusDX offers Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density (ENFD) testing, a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for detecting small fiber neuropathy. By analyzing tiny nerve fibers in the skin through a simple biopsy, ENFD testing provides the clarity needed when traditional nerve studies appear normal but symptoms persist.

What is ENFD Testing?

ENFD testing measures the density and health of small nerve fibers in the skin—critical for transmitting sensations such as pain and temperature. Using minimally invasive punch biopsies from standardized sites (such as the arm, thigh, or leg), our pathologists apply advanced immunohistochemistry techniques to visualize and quantify these fibers with precision.

Why It Matters

Small fiber neuropathy can cause pain, burning, tingling, or numbness, often in the extremities, and is linked to conditions like diabetic neuropathy and autoimmune disorders. ENFD testing is:

Highly Accurate – Sensitive and specific for diagnosing small fiber neuropathy

Actionable – Identifies presence and severity, even when nerve conduction studies are normal

Reliable – Performed in CAP-accredited, CLIA-certified laboratories with expert pathology review

The EmeritusDX Advantage

At EmeritusDX, we combine scientific expertise, advanced technology, and a commitment to patient care to deliver fast, reliable results that empower physicians to make informed decisions. Our ENFD testing service supports earlier diagnosis, more personalized treatment strategies, and improved patient outcomes.

Partner with EmeritusDX to bring clarity and confidence to neuropathy diagnosis.
